This book deals with the background to European presence in the Senegambia Region. Colonial rule and its problems are also examined. About the Author

Patience Sonko-Godwin is a Gambian who has produced much work in the history of the Senegambia Region. She received her first degree in History and English at Fourah Bay college, the University of Sierra Leone and her masters at the University of Cahfornia Santa Barbara, California. She taught History and English in St Helena Secondary School and returned to her native Gambia to teach at Nusrat Senior Secondary School. She taught mainly history for fourteen years and she rose to the position of Acting Vice-Principal.

She later joined the National Council For Arts And Culture as the Principal Cultural Officer of the Research and Documentation Division. She retired from this position and in now fully engaged in research and writing on aspects of the history of the region. She also delivers lectures to students, scholars, and various social groups at home and from abroad. She is also a consultant of great renown. She is presently working on two books namely:-

(1) TRADE IN THE SENEGAMBIA REGION
(Deals with issues such as Internal trade, Slave trade, and legitimate trade in the Senegambia Region.

(2) DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL INDUSTURIES
From the precolonial period
(Deals with the historical developments , technology, social and economic importance of salt, soap, iron gold etc. in relation to Senegambia and the outside world)
